The site is developed along the small bay enclosed between Monte Gallo and Monte Pellegrino.At the end of the bay of Mondello, within the resort La Torre, rises a tower commonly called in ancient world “ torre del fico d’india” probably for the prickly pears that grew inside.Built in 1445 by the Senate of Palermo, whose task was to arrange for its care and maintenance, it’s used for sighting and branch road between the tuna nets’s people and that of Mazzone di Gallo of which remain only a few ruins and the tank. The garrison, consisting of two soldiers, was in charge of the Senate and the Archbishop of Palermo.The tower for the lightness of its structure, it seems that is not equipped with artillery. It ‘s very small, cylindrical with brickwork in rows, it was renovated quite correctly. It can be reached through a path with a slight slope that goes through the bushes of the Mediterranean..Inside there is a single circular room, a large fireplace and a window on the front towards the sea. |
The hamlet rises thank to a fishing village born around a tuna nets. Of this ancient structure in effect until the beginning of 1900 remains today the only local memory. the rooms used to tuna nets have been converted for other business purposes and a fifteenth-century round tower. The surrounding area was marshy until early 1900, when it was made a huge drainage.
